An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

An occurrence at owl creek is a short story by Ambrose Bierce. This story talks about a man who has been sentenced to death by an army.

A man standing on the edge of a wood plank. His wrist tied up behind. In is neck lay a rope tied up to the top of the bridge. On the other side of the plank stood an army official. This life was swinging on a seesaw. Below the bridge was a river.

Between the swing of life and death, he had the time to dream. This middle time gave him hope. Hope that almost seemed real, but was just an illusion. He believed that when the official step down and he falls deep down into the river, he would somehow manage to untie the knots that tied his hand and legs and swim across the swiftly moving river, run a few miles and reach his home to his love.

Here time gave this man hope for survival, even though he knew that he is not going get anyway out and his life was going to end in a few minutes.

We believe that “ time heals everything “. We keep hoping that as time passes situation will get better. But does time really heal? Or is it just a way console ourselves because we feel helpless.

In this story too, the man is helpless and uses the time he had, hoping he gets his last chance of survival.

Looking Closely

The last two weeks were dominated by the visual: first watching Cléo de 5 à 7, followed by a discussion on time relates to individual or personal time. The film had the class think about real and cinematic time, the ideas of age and beauty, the relevance of insecurity and the sense of impending doom.

Today’s class turned to the insights of John Berger, and the first episode of Ways of Seeing, stopping to talk about the role of time with respect to art and what happens to images in the age of mechanical reproduction. We’re reading the essay through the week and will discuss it in the next class. Additionally, each student picks one work in the canon of western art and the way the artwork deals with time!

Time for us

Time is a conduit for events and occurrences. Time controls everything. Time is like a river; continuous and graceful. So flowing along with time is one of the best things man could do to live a better life. But just as the river changes its course and enters a path of huge rocks and thorny plants, time sometimes takes a turn for more inconvenient incidents in the life of man.

Nevertheless, this undesirable   path of time is what we call life. For time beats down those who try to go against it. But others, who survive, are the ones who relive their lost time, by sacrificing their current ones. As they say ‘Nothing is true, everything is permitted’. For nothing is true means, time relieves everything of its misery and nothing is going to last forever. To say ‘everything is permitted’ means that man is the architect of his own actions. And he is responsible for whatsoever he does. Whether he chooses to accept the essence of time or chooses to ignore it, time judges him by his actions and delivers a fitting result to him.

Time in real life is too powerful to be controlled, slowed down, manipulated or stopped in any way. So it’s safe to say that everything is slave to time.  Humans and other living beings depend on time to manage their lives and their activities so as to be the ones flowing along with it. It is beautiful to see how different situations forces human being to perceive the passage of time differently. For example, at times of excitement and worries, the time is perceived to have slowed down, while during events of fear and anxiousness.

Nevertheless, time is one of the things humans have managed to advance and develop on large scale during the years. Naturally, the concept of time is as crucial to us as is air and water.

Personal relation with Time

Time taken for granted and mourned when lost.

Time and Space are woven together. When I think about time, I always think of it in a physical space whether it’s in past, present or future. According to me, time is an experience. You capture memories and moments in time. Time often makes me regret things. Time to me is like a boundary, a deadline. A constant reminder that I’m running out of time in life, or rather running towards the finish line of life.
There’s so much to do and so much to say and every time i take a nap I feel like time slips by taking away hours from my hand. As i wake up reality bites and I feel guilty about the time i wasted.
Regrets  are hidden behind the months and years that have passed stored in my memory and ticking away.
I often feel that time is moving faster when I am happy and slows down when I am sad. We can see time and hear time but we do not pay attention. I believe everything heals with time, that time’s whats needed to change things or for things to happen.
I also believe that time changes a person and person’s behavior towards people or situations. I take for things granted until mortality is in question.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is a classic film based on the book ‘An Occurrence at Own Creek Bridge’ by Ambrose Bierce. The film is directed by Robert Enrico. The story talks about a who is to be hung by the neck, by the military. As the rope is tightened around his neck, the man begins to panic. Luckily for him, the rope breaks as he falls and he escapes his fate and returns back to his family. However, as soon he reaches home and embraces his wife, he screams in pain and his neck snaps. The camera then pans back to the bridge where his lifeless body hangs by the rope confirming the visions were a figment of his imagination before the kiss of death.

The concept of time in this film is a little complicated due to the fact that the man floats back in his memories which are blended by the fiction of him breaking free from the noose and returning to his family. The speed of time keeps on fluctuating. The man loses his life within a matter of seconds, though his fantasies run for a comparatively longer time. It is wise to accept that everyone and everything will eventually run out time. With time in control and as a scale, it can neither be changed nor manipulated and any attempt to control it is futile.
