REFLECTION

This project was intensive yet was interesting to learn to watch movies through a different perspective.

This project also enhanced our creative boundaries as it pushed us to do better and finally construct a narrative through digital media.

Since we chose our lens as makeup and hairstyle, we worked using makeup as the medium of communication for the first time and it was a brilliant experience to learn not only about the tones, shades, tints, the exposure of highlights and conturing of various makeup styles but also various trends of hairstyling and more over its evolution.

It not only helped us to see moving image differntly but also taught us to create them with our interpretation and perspective.

Artist Statement

In the second semester of time studio and time seminar we had to   watch 11 movies and choose a lens through which we could portray these movies with a narrative and hence we were divided into groups to work for the same.

My group decided on three lens initially

*Make up

*Costume design

*Drama

Process 2: Choosing our lens as drama

At first we had the idea of portraying melodrama of each movie but this idea failed since we had no idea as to how to show that into a multimedia format.

Process 3: Chossing our lens as makeup

Stage 1

we thought on our next lens which was makeup and decided on choosing the male protagonist of each movie and portray their makeup through a form of a video.

But this idea was again a fail because we analyised theres is not much differnce in the makeup of the male protagonist of each movie. However there is change in the hair style and costume but not any facial makeup changes.

Stage2

Hence we decided on taking up each female character of the movies and portray their characteristics through face painting.

For example, an abstract form of few animals who share the same characteristics as the female protagonist have in the movie.

This idea was too westernised so we scraped off this idea.

Process 4 : Ideating on iconography

After few trial and error we thought of working with the idea of comparing each female protagonist to an indian mythological figure.

For example- Tabu was being compared to goddess Mohini, but what we released is that this concept of us was not showing time.

Hence Iconography of each female charecter of the movie through mythological figure was a fail since we were not quite sure about the concept itself.

Process 5: Fixing on a final lens

Finally we decided to go ahead with the lens of makeup and hairstyle which we originally though of but this time we changed the subject of focus from male progonists to each female protagonist of all the eleven movies.

We studied and analysed each female protagonist’s makeup and hairstyle.

We critically looked at how each stroke of makeup changed their character and how makeup in particular has changed or evolved throughout these eleven movies.

Process 6:  Final narrative in form of a stop motion

We made a stop motion video where we traced the timeline of these movies through the art of makeup and hairstyle.

We studied critically our chosen len.

The video clearly shows how makeup and hairstyles changed from Do Bigha Zamine to Queen

We have tried to show how the basic contouring of the face has changed over the period in the Indian cinema.

We have also shown how the winged eyeliner in Shahib Biwi Aur Gulam was over dramatized and how over a series of movies like Shatranj Ke Khilari it changed to over dramatic use of kajal and finally in Maqbool where there is minimal use of eyeliner on the eyelid but at the same time a thin stroke of kajal can be traced.

However the Indian cinema had evolved in the art of makeup from over dramatic and dark makeup and fancy hairstyles to minimalistic makeup for example In later movies like Queen and Dil Chahata Hai.

In the end of the video we show a face without any makeup to pose a question on the viewers mind “who’s next”.

This question will bring people’s attention and force their minds to think what could be the future of makeup In the Indian cinema, is it going to go back to from where it started or is it going to be no makeup or is it going to take a whole new transformation in future.

Time – Final

Time for me before 7 weeks from now meant just a unit. To be precise it meant the number of hours, minutes and seconds in a day. But as we went in detail about understanding time I Realised that time is not only a very wide concept to study but also a very confusing one. It has all kinds of study in it scientific, phycological, emotional, physical etc. I personally feel that to know time and to study it in detail it would a man his entire lifetime. What’s interesting about this project of time is it made me unconsciously realise that time is actually a good organiser for my life. In the past, I subconsciously organised all Good/Bad memories in my head on the basis of time. Even If I look at my present, the daily things I do are all according to time for example:  When I go for a bath, Eat my Lunch/Dinner, Sit to study, Have some alone time all of this planned out in the day at some particular time. In fact, if I actually think of it Time organises my future life also. What I am going to do tomorrow in my head I will set a particular time for it. For eg: If my room is in a mess, in my head  I will tell myself, tomorrow first thing in the morning I will clean this mess up. To put it in a nutshell what I think of time is that it organises my entire life and I use it to plan out each and every day of my life.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This story is about a guy who discovers that his girlfriend undergoes a psychiatrist’s experimental procedure to erase the memories the couple had. They tried for years to work out their relationship but he was so frustrated of loving this women who did not love him back that he to went under the procedure as well, to erase his memories of Clementine. so basically they talk about how Joel wants to remove Clementine memory but he doesn’t want to forget her cause he loves her. The film, that’s taking place within Joel’s follows his memories of Clementine backwards in time as each recent memory is replaced. However once the procedure starts he watches his memories of her fade away, he realises that he still loves her, and may be too late to correct his mistake so he starts smuggling her away into parts of his memory where she doesn’t belong which alters other things about his memories as well.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Time doesn’t always seem to move at the same pace. When you’re eagerly waiting for something to happen, time can move soo slowly. But when you’re waiting for something to not happen, time simply seems to disappear. Just like in real life, time is very fluid in this story. At certain points, time races along at dizzying speeds, but at others, it crawls along at a snail’s pace.
Similarly for the man in the movie who was going to be hanged time passed very slowly. He imagined escaping from the trial and meeting his wife. While he was being hanged he shuts his eyes and imagines that the rope breaks while he falls into the water and he escapes. After he escapes, he runs as fast as he can to meet his wife and go back home. Though his imagination allows him to temporarily escape the highly regimented time set by the soldiers, his body never breaks free. In real life when you are eagerly waiting for something time slows down, but here when the man is imagining the time actually increases because the time that he takes to reach his house is very less ,so that also shows its an illusion and not real. When certain things are happening, time races along quickly, and in others, time moves in slow motion.

The touch of Time.

Time is perpetual. Time flies. Time has a different meaning in everyone’s life. Time is something that requires being valued. Time lost can never be gained. It neither has a commencement nor a cessation. Yet man has divided it into the past, present and future. Time has a denouement it moves. What was yesterday is not today and what is today is not what will be tomorrow.
Time doesn’t wait for anyone. It is commonly verbally expressed that time and tide waits for no man. If you waste time you will never get it back. The most sapient makes utilization of time fruitfully. Time is a medicine, it rejuvenates wounds. Human beings are emotional and at some point of time they have been hurt by another person emotionally, but time avails us to forgive and forget.Time avails a person to grow because as time passes you learn a plethora of different things that you experience, experiences that avail you to make decisions, decisions that are consequential that we have to take within a certain period.
Forget the past make utilization of the present and make your future effulgent. Utilize them congruously cause if the train is disoriented, there’s no looking back.

Time is a sort of river of passing of passing events, and strong is it’s current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes it’s place, and this too will be swept away.

Relativity of Time

Relativity means the laws of physics are the same everywhere. What laws of light and gravity we observe are the same for someone in a far off corner of the universe. The same applies to time.time and space are relative. Time passes slower the faster one goes. If a twin rides in the speeding spaceship to some distant star and then comes back she will be younger than her sister who stayed on Earth.Different viewers will see the timing and spacing of events differently. What for us are a million years may just be a blink of an eye for someone flying in a high-speed rocket or falling into a black hole.

Cléo from 5 to 7

This movie shows us Cléo, a French singer, who is afraid of getting the result of a test from her doctor. She believes that she had cancer and will die of the disease. She was to get her results that day at 18:30h. The two hours from 17:00 to 19:00 were the longest days of the year in her life. While waiting for the results Cléo visits a fortune teller who predicts stomach cancer. After she leaves from the fortune tellers place she drinks coffee and buys a new hat with her housekeeper. After this she meets her boyfriend in a room full of cats and swings, then her composer in the same place. After working for the composer, she puts on a black dress and removes her wig and tries to see things from a different perspective, learning much from her friend who poses nude for sculptors, at the end of the day she meets and has a brief affair with a military man. Finally, she meets her doctor who gives her his diagnosis. Time for her crawled along at a very slow

Time for her crawled along at a very slow pace .Two hours seemed like 2 days . The fear of dying had made time pass very slowly for her .This belief also affects how she approaches the day , from her encounters with her friends and what she observes in the strangers around her.
